Health Challenge Day 4: No Added Sugar

Health Challenge Day 4: No Added Sugar

Everyone feeling limber from your spinal mobility? Now imagine if you did that every day! You would be a new person.

For Day 4 we are moving in the the nutrition side of our challenge with… No added sugar.

What counts as added sugar? Anything where the sugar doesn’t come naturally with the food. So fruit is approved, however adding sugar or honey to your coffee is not.

Be sure to check out your nutrition labels. You might find yourself surprised by how much sugar is in seemingly healthy items you eat every day. People are often surprised by how much sugar is in salad dressings, smoothies and other pre-made “health drinks”, bread, cereal, milk, yogurt, and even supplements. If you find your supplements have added sugar, let us know and we can recommend some higher quality options for you.

The Thyroid

Your Questions Answered

Since January is Thyroid Awareness Month we thought we would talk about your thyroid’s roll in your body, what happens when it isn’t working correctly, and what you can do to support your thyroid’s function, including Neuro-Structural chiropractic care.

Still have questions? Contact our practice in Santa Clara, CA to schedule a Complimentary Consultation.

Patients often ask us about thyroid problems and if chiropractic can help. Since January is Thyroid Awareness Month we thought we would talk about your thyroid’s roll in your body, what happens when it isn’t working correctly, and what you can do to support your thyroid’s function.

As you may already know, your thyroid is an endocrine (hormone) gland located in your neck right under your voice box. This gland influences every cell in your body. It regulates your metabolism, controls fat burning, and influences the growth and development of nearly every process in your body. Pretty important right? Additionally, its nerve supply and connection to your brain comes from the Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve, which is a branch of the Vagus nerve, located at the C4-T1 levels of the cervical (neck) spine.

Many people in the United States have problems with their thyroid function. It is estimated that 40% of the Adult population has Hypothyroidism. (N Eng J Med, 315:1486; 1986)  And “women are five to eight times more likely than men to have thyroid problems.” (American Thyroid Association)

So, now that we know what our thyroid glands are and what they do, we can talk about what happens whey they are not functioning correctly. An unhealthy thyroid can lead to many health issues such as fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, acne, eczema, gum disease, infertility, cancer, and autoimmune diseases.

Some of the symptoms of thyroid inadequacy (hypoactive) are:

  • Cold hands / feet or cold sensitivity

  • Constipation

  • Infertility

  • Muscle cramping

  • Increased serum cholesterol

  • Dry, rough skin/ dry hair and brittle nails

  • Chronic fatigue

  • Difficulty losing weight

  • Swollen hands / feet or puffy face, or abdominal bloating

Hyperactive thyroid has similar symptoms, but also some opposite effects like:

  • Feeling restless, nervous, emotional, irritable, and as if you're always on the go

  • Sleeping poorly

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Frequent bowel movements

  • Irregular menstrual periods in women

  • Weight loss (or weight gain, in rare cases)

  • Rapid, forceful, or irregular heartbeat

  • Lack of menstrual periods in women

  • Protruding eyes or exophthalmos

The best way to diagnose a thyroid issue is through blood tests and a full thyroid panel. A lot of times a standard blood test isn’t complete enough to get a full picture and will often times under diagnose a thyroid problem.

Some of the most common factors contributing to the development of a thyroid problem are:

  • Halogens in the environment like Chlorine, Flouride, Bromine

  • Poor gut health

  • Lack of nutrients like Zinc, Copper, B vitamins, Vitamin C, Iodine, and Selenium

  • Structural shifts in the cervical and thoracic spine

Treatments for thyroid related problems vary from standard medical hormone replacement to more natural ways with nutrition and lifestyle changes. Regardless of which course of treatment is chosen, changes to your lifestyle are imperative because a thyroid issue is typically a symptom of a larger problem. If you are only treating the symptoms, the underlying root cause will not be addresses and will manifest differently later in life.

Some of these lifestyle changes and supplementation are:

  • Essential fatty acids (omega 3’s available in the office)

  • Healing your gut (probiotics, soon tone available in the office)

  • Vitamins and mineral like B’s, C, Iodine, Selenium, Zinc (soon to be available in the office)

  • Avoid toxins like Chlorine and Flourine

  • Avoid plastic containers

  • Avoid processed food

  • Exercise

  • Neuro-Structural Chiropractic Adjustments

  • Get enough rest

At Platinum Chiropractic our goal is Neuro-Structural Correction of the spine and nervous system. In this way we improve and normalize the function and connection of the nerve supply from the brain to the body, allowing glands such as your thyroid and other bodily systems to work properly. We have many patients who have seen incredible improvements in their thyroid function as a result of specific chiropractic adjustments.

5 Easy Tips to Improve Your Home Air Quality

Improvehomeairquality

As promised in our Houseplant appreciation post, here are 5 Easy Tips to Improve Your Home Air Quality.

  1. Utilize floor mat at every door: All sorts of chemicals can enter your home via the dirt on shoes. Door mats reduce the amount of dirt, pesticides, and other pollutants from getting into your home.

  2. Avoid artificial/synthetic fragrances: You may associate that lemon or piney fresh scent with a clean home. Unfortunately synthetic fragrances in laundry products and air fresheners emit dozens of different chemicals into the air. Most fragrances are derived from petroleum products, and generally haven’t been tested to see if they have any significant adverse health effects in humans when they are inhaled.

  3. House plants: Many house plants are known for their ability for cleaning the air in your home. Check out our recent post on Facebook and Instagram for suggestions on specific plants.

  4. Increase your Ventilation: Most home heating and cooling systems, including forced air heating systems, do not mechanically bring fresh air into the house. Opening windows and doors, utilizing window or attic fans, or running a window air conditioner with the vent control open increases the outdoor ventilation rate.

  5. Keep your sheets and clothes clean: Dust mites are a leading cause of poor air quality. They often hang out in the fabric of your homes such as bedding, cushions, and curtains. Clean these items regularly in low allergenic washing soap, including your pillows, to get rid of those mites.

Your Electrical System

Structural shifts could be subtle, but they weaken your structure and obstruct your electrical system, which can cause many secondary conditions. Schedule a Complimentary Consultation today.

Chiropractic care is all about the skeletal structures of the body protecting the delicate electrical system (Nervous system) that coordinates all the cellular functions from your brain to the tips of your fingers and toes. This complex system is constantly being affected by our lifestyles. We sit, we lift, we slip, we fall, we turn and twist. All the while our skeletal system is moving, shifting, bending and protecting the vital structures inside.

Our goal at Platinum Chiropractic is to find the kinks and shifts that may have occurred suddenly or developed over time. These structural shifts could be subtle, but they weaken your structure and obstruct your electrical system, which can cause many secondary conditions. There's never a bad time to get checked and corrected, because this is happening constantly throughout our life. It's much easier to keep things normal and in check, rather than wait until you develop problems. If this makes you think of friends or family that you know are suffering from a physical condition that we can help with, share this article.

Below are three tips to keep in mind through the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.

1) Make sure you get in for your adjustments. This will ensure you’re feeling great and your electrical system is functioning at its best so that you can adapt to all the stress through the holiday month.

It's All In The Hips

HipMobility.jpg

Do you sit all day every day? If you're like most people then you probably sit for an average of 11 hours per day.

Do you wonder why your back hurts? One of the causes can be improper tensioning your hips.

Since your hips are directly tied in to your lower back, there are a few mobility stretches that can help alleviate this issue and help you restore your flexibility.

Come join us for this hip mobility class to learn more. RSVP today, space is limited.

Keep Your Brain Flowing

Chiropractorsantaclara.jpeg

In your body, inside your spinal cord there exists a flow of cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) that circulates into your brain and flows back down your spinal cord. This fluid carries nutrients throughout and removes waste from your central nervous system. It even has its own immune system and cells that are different from the rest of your body. It is vital for the function of your brain tissues that the flow of your CSF is maintained and unimpeded.

So the question is, how do you make sure the proper flow of your CSF is maintained? Well you are in luck because, that is one of the benefits of being under chiropractic care with specific adjustments. What you may not know is that Neuro-Structural correction affects, and helps to normalize the flow of your CSF by reducing Neuro-Structural shifts that cause blockages in your spinal cord (Think of how blockages in your arteries, can cause problems to your blood-circulatory system). Other ways that you can naturally affect the movement of your CSF is via exercise and breath work, like in yoga and meditation.

Tips for Joint Health

Interested in learning more about keep your joints (and especially your spine) healthy? Come to our workshop on August 14... Move Your Spine. Dr. Karo will be leading a mobility class full strategies to maximize your Neuro-Strucutral chiropractic care for both the short and long term.

While there are several different types of joints in the body, they all require the same factors to stay healthy. Our joints are special because, unlike most other parts of our body, there is almost no blood supply feeding directly into them. This is relevant because blood is our body’s way of nourishing itself and removing waste. So for joints, this means there is no pump (the heart) to move blood in and out. Instead, joints rely on internal bio-mechanics (movement) to pump fluids and nutrients in and  out of each joint.

This is why the most important factors for joint health are proper alignment, daily full range movement, and nutrients. For each of us this means we need to make sure we move our joints everyday. One of the key benefits of chiropractic care is the resulting improvement in joint biomechanics of your spine, which creates healthier joint cells.

Interested in learning more about keep your joints (and especially your spine) healthy? Come to our workshop on August 14... Move Your Spine. Dr. Karo will be leading a mobility class full of strategies for how to manage the daily wear and tear on our joints and how to keep your joints and spine healthy over the long term.

What is Protection?

Protection

When a patient has completed their Neuro-Structural Corrective Care Plan and achieved great results, they become eligible for Protection Care. People choose to come in and get checked for Neuro-Structural Shifts because, even though they no longer have glaring symptoms, they want to protect their structure from drifting and or shifting and maintain the progress they have made.

Keeping your nervous system free of interference, allows your body to function without any loss or compensation, and prevents problems before they arise. Since many secondary conditions, aka symptoms, are typically caused by structural shifts, wouldn’t it make sense to get checked and adjusted on an ongoing basis to allow your body to work normally? Remember, normal is healthy.

Send us an email if you are interested in learning more about Protection Care. info@platinumchiroca.com

Reduce Inflammation & Sunburn

ReduceSunburn

Do you know the easiest way to reduce systemic (whole body) inflammation, reduce burning from the sun, maintain healthier skin, build a healthier nervous system, and improve digestion?

Get more Omega 3 fatty acids in your diet. Yes, it's that simple!

The most abundant sources of Omega 3's comes from wild fatty fish like salmon, sardines, mackerel, and anchovies. If you're not eating these on a daily basis you're probably too low and need start taking a high quality supplement. At Platinum Chiropractic we recommend our Innate Choice Omega 3's because it's of the highest quality.

When it comes to supplements, we only recommend very few because it is best to get your nutrients from your regular diet. However, taking an Omega 3 supplement is essential because we don't get enough in our diets and it is essential to our overall health, and more specifically our nervous system health.
