Shoulder Mobility & Rehab

Look at this good looking group of people! great to see everyone who made it to our workshop on Tuesday night. We hi-lighted some strategies everyone can do at home or at work to keep their shoulders healthy and happy. We went through some basic, but powerful movements starting from the neck out to the hands.

Take a look the video below for an except from the event. If you're not already following us, for more videos and tips, make sure to like us on our social media channels:

Vitamin D... What's all the fuss?

Vitamin D is a profoundly important nutrient that provides a vast array of health benefits. The question is, do we really need to supplement? And if we do, what’s the proper dosage?

It is estimated that up to 85% of people have insufficient levels of vitamin D and are unaware of their deficient state. While conventional media and medicine promote sun avoidance, doing so can actually put your health in grave danger and cause vitamin D deficiency (Mercola.com).

Vitamin D is a very special vitamin because it has so many uses in the body; it’s actually more like a hormone. Over 3,000 genes that we know of are symbiotically using Vitamin D.

Dr. Robert Heaney, a professor and one of the most well respected researchers in the field, has studied osteoporosis, vitamin D, and calcium physiology for over 50 years. Trained as a physician and endocrinologist, he has been working at the Creighton University’s Osteoporosis Research Center, which he founded, since the late 1960s, with a focus on bone biology. “Inevitably, when you deal with bones, sooner or later, your path crosses with vitamin D, which is vital and important for a whole host of functions,” says Heaney. According to him, vitamin D is involved in the biochemical cellular machinery of all cells and tissues in your body. When you do not have enough, that “machinery” does not work very well. Consequently, your entire body struggles to operate as programmed into our genomes.

Optimal vitamin D levels can slash your risk of cancer by as much as 60%. Keeping your levels optimized can help prevent at least 16 different types of cancer, including pancreatic, lung, ovarian, prostate, and skin cancers. Moreover, vitamin D can build your defenses against cancer and other diseases by:

  • Enhancing the self-destruction of mutated cells (which can replicate and cause cancer)

  • Slowing down the production and spread of cancer cells

  • Reducing the risk of other conditions as well, including type 2 diabetes, chronic inflammation, age-related macular degeneration (the leading cause of blindness), and Alzheimer’s disease.

  • Exhibiting its infection-fighting abilities in the treatment of tuberculosis, pneumonia, colds, and flu.

  • Improving seizure control in epileptics.

The best way to attain Vitamin D is through sun exposure without the use of sun block between 10am and 2pm. The sun provides beneficial UVB wavelengths that are needed to optimize your levels. It emits two types of wavelengths at different periods in a day: UVA rays and UVB rays. Your body requires UVB for vitamin D production. Unless you’re living in a tropical region, you can not get vitamin D from the sun year round. That is why a good vitamin D supplement is essential for health.

Experts agree that adults need about 5,000 IU’s and children need about 3,000 IU’s per day to maintain healthy levels. Take a look at Dr. Karo's recommended Vitamin D supplement in our online store where Platinum Preferred Patients receive 5% off. Both of these supplements are of the highest quality and are coupled with both vitamin K, specifically K2 as MK-7 since they work better synergistically. Vitamins D and K are essential for optimal bone and blood vessel health and for maintaining the immune system in proper balance.

Segmental Movement Dysfunction

SMD takes the same principals as MDS and relates them to the joints or segments of the body. Each and every one of your segments are designed to move throughout their full range of motion everyday in order to stay healthy. When these segments don’t move, become fixated, or distort the proper alignment, a toxic or negative sensation is sent to the brain beginning a decrease in the normal functions of your body, increasing your body’s stress response, increasing muscular tension, and leading to degeneration and disease.

Similar to that of the Movement Deficiency Syndrome (MDS), which we talked about a few weeks ago, we are living in an epidemic of Segmental Movement Dysfunction (SMD). Your most important segments are located in your spine, protecting your central nervous system, and in particular your upper neck region where your brain-stem is located.

Why is this daily movement through a correct and full range of motion so important? Believe it or not, the only way joints receive nutrients in and push waste out is by moving. There are no blood vessels within joints, therefore your joints need to move fully each and every day to maintain themselves, or else they start to decay.

Seems simple enough right? But when joints become fixated or displaced from their proper alignment, it becomes more complicated. One of the major reasons we develop fixated, immobile or shifted segments and joints is due to physical traumas. Physical traumas come in two fashions. One is a sudden trauma, like a car accident, falling while learning to walk, or a difficult birth. The second is repetitive postural micro traumas, such as sitting and/or working for long periods of time in poor positions. This causes segments of the spine to distort, shift, lock, and create a cascade of dysfunction of the brain and immediate structures of the body.

Regular spinal hygiene in the form of chiropractic care is necessary for the maintenance of these segmental joints throughout a life time. Chiropractic at its most basic level is all about motion and how that motion creates homeostasis (balanced function of your physiology) in the body.

Some of the effects of SMD:*

Joints:

  • Shrinks joint capsule

  • Increases compressive loading

  • Leads to joint contractures (shortening and hardening)

Ligaments:

  • Lowers failure or yield point

  • Decreases thickness of collagen fibers

  • Changes Disc Bio-chemistry

  • Decreases oxygen

  • Decreases glucose

Bone:

  • Decreases bone density

  • Eburnation (bone degeneration)

  • Osteophyte formation (bone Spurs)

Muscle:

  • Decrease thickness of collagen fibers

  • Decreases oxidative potential

  • Decreases muscle mass

  • Decreases mitochondria

  • Increases connective tissue fibrosis

At Platinum Chiropractic our focus is to reduce the SMDs in your body through our Neuro-Structural Corrective care. This is exactly what we are doing when we check and adjust your body. We are restoring your body to normal movement, so that it can function as it was designed.

Movement Deficiency Syndrome

Dr. James Chestnut, who we had the opportunity to present this weekend, coined the term ‘Movement Deficiency Syndrome’ to identify the necessity of both physical activity and exercise on human physiology, function, and health. Physical activity and exercise are necessary components to keeping our bodies in working order, via supporting our genetic requirement for sufficient and pure movement. Our genes literally require movement to express healthy adaptation from our environment, Epigenetics 101. Unfortunately, according to a 2001 study “approximately 70% of adults in the United States do not undertake the recommended 30 minutes of moderate physical activity, five or more times per week, which includes those 24% of Americans who have no physical activity.” And this happens to only be the minimum amount that is required to avoid a chronic disease! (Brozinick et al.,Molecular Cell 7: 1085-1094, 2001)

We have a big job to do by teaching everyone we can about the exceptional benefits of physical movement and exercise. It could literally save someone’s life, is accessible, and all you just have to do is mimic our ancestral hunter-gatherer patterns. Daily physical activity is an integral part of our genetic make up. What we’ve found works best, is a rhythm of days of high intensity exercise, reminiscent of hunting, alternated with days of rest and light activity. Keep in mind, this exercise didn’t include basic physical activities of building and moving camp, cooking, cleaning, butchering, carrying water, and other requirements for survival also done on a daily basis. Many modern diseases, not including Osteoarthritis, did not exist when we lived as a society according to hunter-gatherer patterns in the pre agricultural age, about 10,000 years ago. Our genes have changed very little from that time period to now, however our day to day activity level has. As humans we require more exercise and movement to stay healthy. (Booth et al. J Appl Physiol 93: 3-30, 2002)

Unfortunately, most of us aren’t living in a society that innately supports lifestyles required for daily survival, i.e. walking to get water. The positive side of living in this day and age is we now have a clearer understanding of what is necessary to stay healthy.

The short of it is, our genes require movement, and we have modern practices that can fulfill these requirements.

Daily Requirements:

  • Mobility: Moving our joints in all available ranges of motion as done during practices of stretching and Yoga.

  • Cardiorespiratory: Elevation of your heart rate through movement and exercise for an absolute minimum of 30 min.

3-5 Times Per Week Requirements:

  • Muscle Loading: Using our muscles to complete tasks such as carrying, climbing, and hunting. If you do not hunt or climb daily, this requirement can be fulfilled through body weight movements or external objects such as weights.

  • High Intensity Activity: Performing intervals of burst exercises such as a 1-3 repetition maximum weight lift, intervals of 100 meter sprints, or about 12 seconds of maximal exertion. Additionally we must perform a sub-maximal exertion for a moderate duration, such as intervals of 200-400 meter sprints.

At Platinum Chiropractic our goal is to provide each of our practice members with the best in Neuro-Structural care as well as the latest in health science information. When we improve the alignment and motion of the spine, we are adjusting your body and allowing it to regain its genetic requirement for movement and exercise. This is why moving well is one of our principles of health.

What to Eat & Why

Nutrition Workshop Recap

During our nutrition workshop we talked about how the health of the people of the United States has been drastically decreasing and how our nutrition is hugely to blame. We have an entire industry selling medication for preventable diseases… What if we could reverse this trend?

The fundamental problems with our nutrition is that

  • we over eat,

  • we're malnourished, and

  • we're overburdened with toxicity and unwanted chemicals that take energy to digest and eliminate from our bodies.

Good nutrition requires a healthy gut system and microbiome in our bodies, which was the focus of the lecture. We talked about the kinds of behaviors and foods that cause a leaky and dysfunctional gut which predisposes us to becoming allergic to our foods and our environment. This in turn has caused a drastic rate of increase of auto immunity in our communities. Our microbiome, the probiotics and prebiotics, are what keep our guts healthy and we should be striving to include these in our diet.

We also touched on macro and micro nutrients, how they add up to give us what we need for proper metabolism, and how they can be neglected and cause weight gain and malnourishment.

Here in the practice we focus on Neuro-Strucural Correction which looks at restoring the connection between the brain and the body (like the digestive system)

Here in the practice we focus on Neuro-Strucural Correction which looks at restoring the connection between the brain and the body (like the digestive system). We shared a study about irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) being caused by improper nerve signals to the gut. This is why so many of our patients report having better digestion when they are under regular care.

In the end we reiterated that nutrition needs to focus on healing the gut, eating whole nutritious foods, and how supplementation can help to round out our nutrition so that we make sure we're getting everything we need to live a healthy life free of disease.

Why Cut What Can Be Untied?

The Rubber Band Game... Ever played?

When the physical obstruction leading to secondary issues (loss of circulation, finger ache, skin color changes) is removed, the finger can eventually return to more normal feeling AND function (assuming the damage isn't irreparable).

Here's how the 'game' works: Wrap a rubber band around one of your fingers. Within a period of time you'll observe how the skin begins to change color and the finger aches as the the blood and nerves are being obstructed.

Now, imagine what would happen if you left the rubber band on your finger for the next hour, day, week, or even longer? The symptoms your finger is experiencing will keep getting worse and eventually will suffer irreparable damage!

So, let's think about the options to address this issue. Which would you choose?

  1. Exercise the finger. This might make your finger feel better; but it doesn't correct the cause of this particular problem.

  2. Massage the finger. This can offer temporary relief; however, the rubber band is still there causing the obstruction.

  3. Apply some pain relieving cream or medicine on the finger. This can also offer temporary relief, but does not remove the actual cause.

  4. Cut the finger off. This can certainly remove the obstruction (and more). Now there's also permanent damage in the body.

  5. Remove the rubber band. When the physical obstruction leading to secondary issues (loss of circulation, finger ache, skin color changes) is removed, the finger can eventually return to more normal feeling AND function (assuming the damage isn't irreparable).

Why are we talking about fingers & rubber bands?

You see, a Neuro-Structural shift in the spine is very similar. It places an obstruction on the nervous system, blood vessels, and other connective tissues just like the rubber band on your finger. This obstruction can lead to secondary issues like back and neck pain, migraines, numbness & tingling, muscle tension, and even lowered immunity.

When people first visit us at Platinum Chiropractic, many people have previously tried the other common solutions to their problems such as taking medicine, going to physical therapy, or having a massage in order to resolve the secondary issue(s) or symptoms they're dealing with.

Our unique focus as an office is that we look for the underlying structural cause of the problem and apply a results-driven plan of Neuro-Structural Correction to FIX it. The adjusting of the Neuro-Structural shift is how we can remove the obstruction to the nervous system and reduce the frequency of it coming back.

The Thyroid

Your Questions Answered

Since January is Thyroid Awareness Month we thought we would talk about your thyroid’s roll in your body, what happens when it isn’t working correctly, and what you can do to support your thyroid’s function, including Neuro-Structural chiropractic care.

Still have questions? Contact our practice in Santa Clara, CA to schedule a Complimentary Consultation.

Patients often ask us about thyroid problems and if chiropractic can help. Since January is Thyroid Awareness Month we thought we would talk about your thyroid’s roll in your body, what happens when it isn’t working correctly, and what you can do to support your thyroid’s function.

As you may already know, your thyroid is an endocrine (hormone) gland located in your neck right under your voice box. This gland influences every cell in your body. It regulates your metabolism, controls fat burning, and influences the growth and development of nearly every process in your body. Pretty important right? Additionally, its nerve supply and connection to your brain comes from the Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve, which is a branch of the Vagus nerve, located at the C4-T1 levels of the cervical (neck) spine.

Many people in the United States have problems with their thyroid function. It is estimated that 40% of the Adult population has Hypothyroidism. (N Eng J Med, 315:1486; 1986)  And “women are five to eight times more likely than men to have thyroid problems.” (American Thyroid Association)

So, now that we know what our thyroid glands are and what they do, we can talk about what happens whey they are not functioning correctly. An unhealthy thyroid can lead to many health issues such as fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, acne, eczema, gum disease, infertility, cancer, and autoimmune diseases.

Some of the symptoms of thyroid inadequacy (hypoactive) are:

  • Cold hands / feet or cold sensitivity

  • Constipation

  • Infertility

  • Muscle cramping

  • Increased serum cholesterol

  • Dry, rough skin/ dry hair and brittle nails

  • Chronic fatigue

  • Difficulty losing weight

  • Swollen hands / feet or puffy face, or abdominal bloating

Hyperactive thyroid has similar symptoms, but also some opposite effects like:

  • Feeling restless, nervous, emotional, irritable, and as if you're always on the go

  • Sleeping poorly

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Frequent bowel movements

  • Irregular menstrual periods in women

  • Weight loss (or weight gain, in rare cases)

  • Rapid, forceful, or irregular heartbeat

  • Lack of menstrual periods in women

  • Protruding eyes or exophthalmos

The best way to diagnose a thyroid issue is through blood tests and a full thyroid panel. A lot of times a standard blood test isn’t complete enough to get a full picture and will often times under diagnose a thyroid problem.

Some of the most common factors contributing to the development of a thyroid problem are:

  • Halogens in the environment like Chlorine, Flouride, Bromine

  • Poor gut health

  • Lack of nutrients like Zinc, Copper, B vitamins, Vitamin C, Iodine, and Selenium

  • Structural shifts in the cervical and thoracic spine

Treatments for thyroid related problems vary from standard medical hormone replacement to more natural ways with nutrition and lifestyle changes. Regardless of which course of treatment is chosen, changes to your lifestyle are imperative because a thyroid issue is typically a symptom of a larger problem. If you are only treating the symptoms, the underlying root cause will not be addresses and will manifest differently later in life.

Some of these lifestyle changes and supplementation are:

  • Essential fatty acids (omega 3’s available in the office)

  • Healing your gut (probiotics, soon tone available in the office)

  • Vitamins and mineral like B’s, C, Iodine, Selenium, Zinc (soon to be available in the office)

  • Avoid toxins like Chlorine and Flourine

  • Avoid plastic containers

  • Avoid processed food

  • Exercise

  • Neuro-Structural Chiropractic Adjustments

  • Get enough rest

At Platinum Chiropractic our goal is Neuro-Structural Correction of the spine and nervous system. In this way we improve and normalize the function and connection of the nerve supply from the brain to the body, allowing glands such as your thyroid and other bodily systems to work properly. We have many patients who have seen incredible improvements in their thyroid function as a result of specific chiropractic adjustments.

Anti-Aging Secret!

Anti aging, your health, and what you can do.

As times goes by, we all notice the effects of aging. What if we could slow down this decline? Science is starting to really look at how we can control or help our genetics to perform better.

One of the ways that DNA is measured is through the telomere length on the end of a DNA strand. Telomeres are the strand of DNA that is attributed to aging and healthy cell function. Throughout your life, they are essentially "used up" to create the cells in your body. Once your telomeres are used up, you no longer produce healthy normal cells, and you begin to decline.

Fortunately there is some good news. One of the features of consistent chiropractic care is its positive affect on DNA. Consistent chiropractic care lengthens these telomere strands, which result in normal production of healthy cell tissue, wow!

Your Electrical System

Structural shifts could be subtle, but they weaken your structure and obstruct your electrical system, which can cause many secondary conditions. Schedule a Complimentary Consultation today.

Chiropractic care is all about the skeletal structures of the body protecting the delicate electrical system (Nervous system) that coordinates all the cellular functions from your brain to the tips of your fingers and toes. This complex system is constantly being affected by our lifestyles. We sit, we lift, we slip, we fall, we turn and twist. All the while our skeletal system is moving, shifting, bending and protecting the vital structures inside.

Our goal at Platinum Chiropractic is to find the kinks and shifts that may have occurred suddenly or developed over time. These structural shifts could be subtle, but they weaken your structure and obstruct your electrical system, which can cause many secondary conditions. There's never a bad time to get checked and corrected, because this is happening constantly throughout our life. It's much easier to keep things normal and in check, rather than wait until you develop problems. If this makes you think of friends or family that you know are suffering from a physical condition that we can help with, share this article.

Keep Your Brain Flowing

Chiropractorsantaclara.jpeg

In your body, inside your spinal cord there exists a flow of cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) that circulates into your brain and flows back down your spinal cord. This fluid carries nutrients throughout and removes waste from your central nervous system. It even has its own immune system and cells that are different from the rest of your body. It is vital for the function of your brain tissues that the flow of your CSF is maintained and unimpeded.

So the question is, how do you make sure the proper flow of your CSF is maintained? Well you are in luck because, that is one of the benefits of being under chiropractic care with specific adjustments. What you may not know is that Neuro-Structural correction affects, and helps to normalize the flow of your CSF by reducing Neuro-Structural shifts that cause blockages in your spinal cord (Think of how blockages in your arteries, can cause problems to your blood-circulatory system). Other ways that you can naturally affect the movement of your CSF is via exercise and breath work, like in yoga and meditation.
