What to Eat & Why

Nutrition Workshop Recap

During our nutrition workshop we talked about how the health of the people of the United States has been drastically decreasing and how our nutrition is hugely to blame. We have an entire industry selling medication for preventable diseases… What if we could reverse this trend?

The fundamental problems with our nutrition is that

  • we over eat,

  • we're malnourished, and

  • we're overburdened with toxicity and unwanted chemicals that take energy to digest and eliminate from our bodies.

Good nutrition requires a healthy gut system and microbiome in our bodies, which was the focus of the lecture. We talked about the kinds of behaviors and foods that cause a leaky and dysfunctional gut which predisposes us to becoming allergic to our foods and our environment. This in turn has caused a drastic rate of increase of auto immunity in our communities. Our microbiome, the probiotics and prebiotics, are what keep our guts healthy and we should be striving to include these in our diet.

We also touched on macro and micro nutrients, how they add up to give us what we need for proper metabolism, and how they can be neglected and cause weight gain and malnourishment.

Here in the practice we focus on Neuro-Strucural Correction which looks at restoring the connection between the brain and the body (like the digestive system)

Here in the practice we focus on Neuro-Strucural Correction which looks at restoring the connection between the brain and the body (like the digestive system). We shared a study about irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) being caused by improper nerve signals to the gut. This is why so many of our patients report having better digestion when they are under regular care.

In the end we reiterated that nutrition needs to focus on healing the gut, eating whole nutritious foods, and how supplementation can help to round out our nutrition so that we make sure we're getting everything we need to live a healthy life free of disease.

Tips for Joint Health

Interested in learning more about keep your joints (and especially your spine) healthy? Come to our workshop on August 14... Move Your Spine. Dr. Karo will be leading a mobility class full strategies to maximize your Neuro-Strucutral chiropractic care for both the short and long term.

While there are several different types of joints in the body, they all require the same factors to stay healthy. Our joints are special because, unlike most other parts of our body, there is almost no blood supply feeding directly into them. This is relevant because blood is our body’s way of nourishing itself and removing waste. So for joints, this means there is no pump (the heart) to move blood in and out. Instead, joints rely on internal bio-mechanics (movement) to pump fluids and nutrients in and  out of each joint.

This is why the most important factors for joint health are proper alignment, daily full range movement, and nutrients. For each of us this means we need to make sure we move our joints everyday. One of the key benefits of chiropractic care is the resulting improvement in joint biomechanics of your spine, which creates healthier joint cells.

Interested in learning more about keep your joints (and especially your spine) healthy? Come to our workshop on August 14... Move Your Spine. Dr. Karo will be leading a mobility class full of strategies for how to manage the daily wear and tear on our joints and how to keep your joints and spine healthy over the long term.

Diabetes Workshop Recap

June's workshop was a hit! We turned the practice into a movie theater to view “Death & Diabetes in the City of Angels” and had a great time speaking with director Jay Vera. Thank you Jay for sharing more about the why behind the film. I also want to congratulate everyone who attended the event. Actively learning is the first step to improving your health. Kudos to you all.

Following the film we spoke about the difficulties we each face with regards to health. Our society makes it easy to be unhealthy, and consequently our communities are facing an epidemic of disease. But the good news is, we can  take our health into our own hands! How you ask? To start…our top 5 Factors in Preventing Diabetes, Heart Disease, and Cancer are:

  • Having a positive community to support healthy lifestyle decisions
  • Eating well (Reduce your Inflammation)
  • Moving well
  • Timing of meals
  • Adaptability

We all know we need to eat better and to exercise, this is not a secret. However, most people don't realize the importance of your body’s ability to adapt. By adaptability I am referring to our body efforts to constantly regulate itself to the surrounding environment. We all learned this as homeostasis of the body, but it's more than that. Adaptability is how our body constantly learns and becomes stronger as we age and go through life. Why is this important? Well for example, it is this adaptability that allows your pancreas to tell your brain it has received a message of how much insulin to make, and that it know how to prepare for your next meal. And how does your body do all of this communicating? Via your nervous system. Which is why chiropractic care is so important, as it maintains the function of your nervous system, so your body can adapt! Pretty cool huh?

For those of you who missed it, check out the documentary via the link above.
