Why Cut What Can Be Untied?

The Rubber Band Game... Ever played?

When the physical obstruction leading to secondary issues (loss of circulation, finger ache, skin color changes) is removed, the finger can eventually return to more normal feeling AND function (assuming the damage isn't irreparable).

Here's how the 'game' works: Wrap a rubber band around one of your fingers. Within a period of time you'll observe how the skin begins to change color and the finger aches as the the blood and nerves are being obstructed.

Now, imagine what would happen if you left the rubber band on your finger for the next hour, day, week, or even longer? The symptoms your finger is experiencing will keep getting worse and eventually will suffer irreparable damage!

So, let's think about the options to address this issue. Which would you choose?

  1. Exercise the finger. This might make your finger feel better; but it doesn't correct the cause of this particular problem.

  2. Massage the finger. This can offer temporary relief; however, the rubber band is still there causing the obstruction.

  3. Apply some pain relieving cream or medicine on the finger. This can also offer temporary relief, but does not remove the actual cause.

  4. Cut the finger off. This can certainly remove the obstruction (and more). Now there's also permanent damage in the body.

  5. Remove the rubber band. When the physical obstruction leading to secondary issues (loss of circulation, finger ache, skin color changes) is removed, the finger can eventually return to more normal feeling AND function (assuming the damage isn't irreparable).

Why are we talking about fingers & rubber bands?

You see, a Neuro-Structural shift in the spine is very similar. It places an obstruction on the nervous system, blood vessels, and other connective tissues just like the rubber band on your finger. This obstruction can lead to secondary issues like back and neck pain, migraines, numbness & tingling, muscle tension, and even lowered immunity.

When people first visit us at Platinum Chiropractic, many people have previously tried the other common solutions to their problems such as taking medicine, going to physical therapy, or having a massage in order to resolve the secondary issue(s) or symptoms they're dealing with.

Our unique focus as an office is that we look for the underlying structural cause of the problem and apply a results-driven plan of Neuro-Structural Correction to FIX it. The adjusting of the Neuro-Structural shift is how we can remove the obstruction to the nervous system and reduce the frequency of it coming back.

The Opioid Crisis and Chiropractic

The opioid epidemic is a serious problem and we are proud to be a part of the solution. Before you turn to pain medication, find out if Neuro-Structural chiropractic can help you.

I am sure you have all heard about the opioid epidemic that the US is facing, but did you know that chiropractic care can be a part of the solution? In fact, "adults receiving treatment for low back pain are 55% less likely to fill a prescription for an opioid if they are receiving chiropractic care." That is a big number!  Check out this article in Boss Magazine by Dr. Sherry McAllister of which talks more about how chiropractic care offers drug-free solutions.

And when you have a friend or family member looking to pain prescriptions for relief, have them give us a call, we would love to help.

Common But Not Normal

Headaches and Back Pain

The most convenient treatment is to ingest a drug that will fool the body into not feeling its own cry for help. It’s convenient, fast and cheap. But it ignores the underlying cause, which, more often than not, is a Neuro-Structural shift putting pressure on the nerves and muscles of the neck.

The two most frequent health issues that people in Santa Clara face are headaches and back pain. These two conditions affect countless lives and interfere with people’s ability to enjoy life to the fullest.

These conditions may be common, but they’re not normal.

Normal is Not an Option

At Platinum Chiropractic we focus on Neuro-Structural Correction because restoring and protecting your body's normal structural alignment is a key factor in maintaining optimal health and wellness.

We all know the human body has a normal temperature, a normal range for blood pressure, and normal eyesight, but most of us are unaware that there is also a normal when it comes to the structural alignment of the spine.

What would happen if there were a shift from the normal alignment of your automobile? How about a shift in your home's foundation? If your spine shifts from its normal structural alignment, the result may be a variety of secondary conditions (symptoms) such as neck and back pain headaches, pinched nerves, sciatica, numbness/tingling – just to name a few.

Restoring and protecting your body's normal structural alignment is a key factor in maintaining optimal health and wellness. That is why here at Platinum Chiropractic we take many objective measurements to gage if your spine has shifted and where those shifts are. This allows us to be more specific with your care that's customized for each person.

Neuro-Structural Correction

What is Neuro-Structural Correction, and how is Platinum Chiropractic different from other chiropractors?

Since most chiropractors in this area are of the conventional variety, I think a great place to start would be to define what is considered to be “conventional chiropractic” care. Conventional chiropractic has the following goals.

  • Decrease muscular spasm
  • Increase range of motion
  • Reduce pain

That is what most chiropractors offer in the way of care, and I believe that most of these folks do a great job.

Unlike conventional chiropractors, here at Platinum Chiropractic, we focus on Neuro-Structural Correction of the spine by utilizing gentle and specific adjustments in an effort to improve/ correct a neuro-structural shift.

We’re all familiar with normal body temperature: 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. How do we know when someone has normal eyesight? The only way to appreciate abnormal- is to know normal.

Now, when it comes to normal we’re not expecting anyone to be perfect. However, if your head is displaced 30mm beyond what’s considered acceptable, you have a neuro-structural shift. Your head shifting forward is no different than your car being forced out of alignment, or the foundation of your house sinking on one side by just a couple of inches. Because the underlying structure has been shifted (regardless of the reason), this deviation of your skull puts abnormal stress on your muscles, tendons, ligaments, spinal bones, and discs- forcing them to put pressure on your nerves and cause secondary conditions (symptoms). We refer to symptoms as secondary conditions because they are a result of a Primary condition or an underlying cause (a Neuro-Structural Shift). Some of these secondary conditions include: Neck Pain, low back pain, headaches, loss of muscular function, muscular tension, nerve impingement syndrome, disc degeneration, decreased energy, and poor sleep, just to name a few.

There are four signs that are clear indicators of a Neuro-Structural Shift. These indicators are not related to age or genetics. They are a result of stress, trauma, repetitive movement and improper ergonomic positions that have disrupted the normal function of the spine. They include a moderate to severe shifting of your structure on a structural photograph; moderate to severe nerve pressure on our nerve scans, decreased spinal biomechanics (movement/ motion of the spine), and an abnormal alignment on an x-ray.

Our goal is to direct your spine to what’s considered to be normal. By doing so, this will relieve pressure on the discs, which subsequently will relieve pressures on the nerves, thus improving/ correcting the shifts, which are not only causing your secondary condition, but are also inhibiting the optimum function of your nervous system.

Objective Measures

Here at Platinum Chiropractic, we focus on a specific specialty of chiropractic care called Neuro-Structural correction, not symptom reduction. Structural shifts cause secondary conditions in the body such as pain, tension, poor mobility, and many others. When we correct the neuro-structure, those secondary conditions that are caused by a structural shift tend to go away.

We do this by taking many objective measures such as neuro scans, structural photographs, x-rays, and biomechanic testing. The second image is a thermography scan from a patient that has complaints of migraines and lower back pain. She was scheduled for surgery before she came to us.

Fascia, What's That?

Fascia is a matrix of connective tissue much like your skin, except it’s under your skin and connects everything from skin to muscles and bones. Virtually every part of your skeleton has this connective tissue.

There are a few tracks of fascia in your body, much like train tracks, that have a continuous connection of tissue starting from a certain place and spanning across the body in various ways. “Anatomy Trains” by Tom Meyers illustrates these points and how different fascial trains connect in our body. One example of this is what he calls the Superficial Back Line.

ChiropractorSanJose_Fascia

This line is one continuous piece of fascia that begins at the bottom of your foot, comes up your calf to your hamstring, up your back, wrapping around your head, and ending at your forehead. The interesting thing is you can affect the flexibility, function, and compliance of these lines by applying pressure anywhere along the line.

First, try and keep your legs straight and bend forward as far as possible. Then try standing on a ball or hard object and massaging the bottom of your foot for at least two minutes per side. Then retry bending forward. You’ll notice that you have much more range of motion in your hamstrings without ever directly stretching them.

Neat trick huh?

Chin Tucks: Good or Bad?

Did you know there is a special movement that only one part of your spine can bio-mechanically do? It is your skull and first cervical segment and the range of movement is called protraction and retraction (sliding forward and backwards without bending). You do this movement by sticking your chin out and tucking it in, as if your giving yourself a “double chin,” all without looking down or up.  Outside of the spine the only other places where such movement exists is the jaw and scapula’s (shoulder blades). All other motion such as flexion and extension (bending forward and backward), lateral flexion (side bending), and rotation can be accomplished with all other vertebrae (spinal segments).

As you know, the upper part of your neck is very important because that area protects your brain stem and other tissues vital to your health. Plus, your upper cervical spine leads the rest of your spine. That is why Neuro-Structural shifts in this region can be the cause of a myriad of secondary conditions such as leg pain. Not because they are directly involved, but because the compensation due to a shift causes downstream and upstream secondary effects and distorts the rest of the spine.

When the spine shifts, it causes secondary conditions (symptoms).

When the spine shifts, it causes secondary conditions (symptoms).

This area is called the C0-C1 (occiput and C1) junction and the total movement forward and backward is about 25 degrees. The reason this matters is because almost everyone is missing this critical range of motion! Because of sitting, working on computers, looking down, texting, sticking out your chin so you don’t have chin rolls…. ;) we are in an epidemic of people who can’t pull their chin back. So this creates a cascade of issues to occur in the spine such as neck tightness, tension headaches, shoulder pain etc.

Solution: At Platinum Chiropractic our solution includes specific adjustments to correct Neuro-Structural shifts and restore proper alignment and motion first. Then we teach specific neck exercises, advise on appropriate sleeping positions, along with other self care, in order to compliment the correction of Neuro-Structural shifts. One of the easiest and most important exercises to practice is tucking your chin in and pushing your head back over your shoulders. Do this when you stand, sit, even lifting weights. Try doing isometric (static) holds by retracting and pushing your head into your headrest of your car when you’re stopped at a red light (avoid looking up so you can maximize this range). It is a good way to release muscular tension as well as strengthening your neck.
