Exercises for Sciatica and Back Pain

Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of your sciatic nerve, which branches from your lower back at L1-S1, goes through your hips and buttocks, and down each leg. Next Tuesday we will be talking about what causes this and what you can do to help manage and prevent it.

Our June workshop is coming up NEXT Tuesday June 11. We will begin with a short anatomy and physiology review, where Dr. Karo will explain how your lumbar spine works, and how it integrates with your hips and lower extremities.

Afterwards we will get interactive, and go through some of the foundational exercises for improving the function of your lower back and hips.

Wear athletic type clothing that you can move freely in.

RSVP below. Space is limited, but friends and family are always welcome!

Sciatica, Lower Back Pain, Leg Pain

Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of your sciatic nerve, which branches from your lower back at L1-S1, goes through your hips and buttocks, and down each leg. At Platinum Chiropractic we approach this problem from the roots.

Sciatica, Lower back pain, leg pain …. it is likely that yourself or someone you know has or is currently experiencing one or more of these symptoms. But what is sciatica really?

Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of your sciatic nerve, which branches from your lower back at L1-S1, goes through your hips and buttocks, and down each leg. Irritation to this nerve bundle anywhere along the pathway may cause lower back pain and, or leg pain, muscle weakness, or foot drop, just to name a few. Because of the wide variety of potential secondary conditions, sciatica is a very loose diagnosis with no effective long term treatment under standard medical care.

However, the way we approach this problem at Platinum Chiropractic is from the roots. Since these nerves originate from the lumbar spine, our first assessment is of the lower spinal vertebrae. We asses for Neuro-Structural shifts that could be irritating the nerves running down the leg. Usually, when we can correct the problem at the cause, the secondary symptoms such as leg pain, cramps, foot drop, etc. tend to go away on their own. We also include specific exercises to address any imbalances and help strengthen after we’ve corrected the problem. This is why we get such great results with our patients who have sciatica, or back pain in general.

We invite you to our next workshop, June 11 at 6:30: Mobility for Low Back Pain to learn more. RSVP below:

Fish Oil (Omega 3's)

How to know you are getting the best

Let’s say that we have two different (brands) of fish oil sitting side-by-side. Each bottle has 1,000 mg capsules. Are the capsules the same? The answer is NO.

Here’s why: With regards to Omega-3 there are HUGE differences with regards to sources, quality, and quantity. The best source of Omega-3 oil is from cold salt-water fish such as sardines, anchovies, herring, and mackerel. Warm water and fresh water are not acceptable sources. Does that mean that eating warm water and fresh water fish is bad? No, they just aren’t good sources of Omega-3.

With regard to quality, much of it has to do with the extraction process of the oil from its source, as well as the elimination of PCB’s, dioxins, furuns, PAHs, mercury, and of course other heavy metals. You obviously want to remove unwanted junk while still preserving the quality of the oil.

When it comes to the right amount, here is what you need to know: At the very least, an average adult should be taking 1000 EPA per day. We did not say 1000mg of omega-3 fish oil per day. We are specifically saying 1000mg of EPA.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids (FAs), EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid). EPA (Eicosapentaenic Acid) is the heart and soul of fish oil. It, along with DHA (which is much more important for little ones and nursing moms), are what counts when it comes to omega-3 oil. Two 1000mg capsules may have very different levels of EPA. Some have as little as 70 mg, and others have as much as 750mg. EPA and DHA are important structural components of cell membranes, affecting membrane fluidity, flexibility, and permeability, as well as the efficiency and character of cellular signaling. Omega-3 FAs are especially critical for proper immune system function, and help to maintain cardiovascular and joint health. Omega-3 FAs are concentrated in eye and brain tissues, where they help to promote proper function of the central nervous system and support eye health. The point? Oil…is not oil…is not oil.

There should also be a natural balance of EPA and DHA as you would find in nature, like when you eat a fish. Most other brands either have low EPA/DHA, or they hyper inflate one or both using chemical processing. You should strive to be as close to nature as possible with an 18:12 full complement fatty acid profile. This way your body can utilize it efficiently.

Now, we all know what to look for in our Omega-3 oil. In our practice, we carry only the finest quality omega-3 oil, in both liquid and soft gels. We take pride in carrying high quality products and we are constantly looking for the best. Massage, Physical Therapy, & Chiropractic

How do these different approaches to physical care help to resolve your health concerns?

If the foundation of a house shifts from its normal structural alignment, the resulting damage can be devastating. 1) Cracks in the walls, 2) creaky floorboards, and 3) windows that don’t open properly are just a few of the symptoms of the underlying cause, a structural shift of the foundation.

Similar to the foundation of a house, structural damage to the spine may be the underlying cause of a myriad of symptoms. Simply bandaging your symptoms is unlikely to correct the true cause of your condition, and may eventually lead to further spinal decay and more aggressive deterioration.

Each of these approaches have their place in your care, but each work in different ways. Let’s use a house as an analogy. Imagine you start noticing difficulty in sliding the house windows up and down, or the doors not shutting correctly, or even noticing a fissure in the wall. Now, you could treat these problems one by one. First, you could start by putting some WD-40 on the window tracks to help them go up and down more smoothly. Then you could shave the door down so that it will shut into the frame better. You can even put paint on the fissure to cover it up. But how long will these patches last for? Usually they come back, over and over again or lead to larger more costly repairs in the future.

Until one day you get a builder out to check the foundation of the house. The builder notices that your home’s foundation has shifted and is causing many of these secondary problems you are experiencing with the house. By fixing the houses’ underlying structure and doing a little bit of work on the secondary repairs, you find things to be right again, and future expenses are avoided. No more need to keep shaving down your doors over and over again or re-patching and painting the walls!

Similar to the house, the foundation of your body is your spine. Structural damage to the spine may be the underlying cause of a myriad of symptoms you are experiencing. When your spine shifts from its normal position, the shifts may impede your body and nerve signals from functioning correctly. Some of the secondary conditions you might experience are tightness in your neck and shoulders, pain in your hips and/or legs, headaches and migraines, and digestive issues just to name a few.

Now just as before, you can treat these problems one by one. You can go to a massage therapist who will look at the soft tissues that hang on the frame of your body. They will find tight spots and loosen them up giving you temporary relief. Massages, however, don’t work on your foundation as much as they work on the outer muscles of your body. This is similar to putting WD-40 on a squeaky window that doesn’t go up and down correctly.

When it comes to your health, there’s no silver bullet. As a healthcare professional, our Doctors of Chiropractic are focused on the best possible outcome. Once your structure is being addressed, the massage and physical therapy may work synergistically with your chiropractic care to achieve optimum results.

Then, let’s say your massage visits don’t quite do the job and your problems keep coming back until someone recommends you visit a physical therapist. The PT will check your areas of complaint and find areas that need to be stretched and/ or strengthened. They might say your muscles aren’t “firing” in certain places which is why you can have dysfunction in your back or leg. They will try to stretch and strengthen certain body parts to improve their function. Often times this will begin to help, but might lose momentum as the stretches and exercises are not addressing the true root cause of your conditions.

You see, neither the massage therapist or the physical therapist is taking a look at correcting your foundation, nor do they have the tools. Instead they are working on the surface areas and secondary conditions. Doctors of Chiropractic who focus on Neuro Structural Correction examine your foundation with many objective measures to see if your structure is shifted from a normal position. These shifts cause pressure on your nerves and can be causing symptoms or dysfunctions down stream, leading to pain and dysfunction. Only when theses spinal shifts are corrected, are your secondary symptoms able to resolve naturally. Once your structure is being addressed, the massage and physical therapy may work synergistically with your chiropractic care to achieve optimum results.

The Thyroid

Your Questions Answered

Since January is Thyroid Awareness Month we thought we would talk about your thyroid’s roll in your body, what happens when it isn’t working correctly, and what you can do to support your thyroid’s function, including Neuro-Structural chiropractic care.

Still have questions? Contact our practice in Santa Clara, CA to schedule a Complimentary Consultation.

Patients often ask us about thyroid problems and if chiropractic can help. Since January is Thyroid Awareness Month we thought we would talk about your thyroid’s roll in your body, what happens when it isn’t working correctly, and what you can do to support your thyroid’s function.

As you may already know, your thyroid is an endocrine (hormone) gland located in your neck right under your voice box. This gland influences every cell in your body. It regulates your metabolism, controls fat burning, and influences the growth and development of nearly every process in your body. Pretty important right? Additionally, its nerve supply and connection to your brain comes from the Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve, which is a branch of the Vagus nerve, located at the C4-T1 levels of the cervical (neck) spine.

Many people in the United States have problems with their thyroid function. It is estimated that 40% of the Adult population has Hypothyroidism. (N Eng J Med, 315:1486; 1986)  And “women are five to eight times more likely than men to have thyroid problems.” (American Thyroid Association)

So, now that we know what our thyroid glands are and what they do, we can talk about what happens whey they are not functioning correctly. An unhealthy thyroid can lead to many health issues such as fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, acne, eczema, gum disease, infertility, cancer, and autoimmune diseases.

Some of the symptoms of thyroid inadequacy (hypoactive) are:

  • Cold hands / feet or cold sensitivity

  • Constipation

  • Infertility

  • Muscle cramping

  • Increased serum cholesterol

  • Dry, rough skin/ dry hair and brittle nails

  • Chronic fatigue

  • Difficulty losing weight

  • Swollen hands / feet or puffy face, or abdominal bloating

Hyperactive thyroid has similar symptoms, but also some opposite effects like:

  • Feeling restless, nervous, emotional, irritable, and as if you're always on the go

  • Sleeping poorly

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Frequent bowel movements

  • Irregular menstrual periods in women

  • Weight loss (or weight gain, in rare cases)

  • Rapid, forceful, or irregular heartbeat

  • Lack of menstrual periods in women

  • Protruding eyes or exophthalmos

The best way to diagnose a thyroid issue is through blood tests and a full thyroid panel. A lot of times a standard blood test isn’t complete enough to get a full picture and will often times under diagnose a thyroid problem.

Some of the most common factors contributing to the development of a thyroid problem are:

  • Halogens in the environment like Chlorine, Flouride, Bromine

  • Poor gut health

  • Lack of nutrients like Zinc, Copper, B vitamins, Vitamin C, Iodine, and Selenium

  • Structural shifts in the cervical and thoracic spine

Treatments for thyroid related problems vary from standard medical hormone replacement to more natural ways with nutrition and lifestyle changes. Regardless of which course of treatment is chosen, changes to your lifestyle are imperative because a thyroid issue is typically a symptom of a larger problem. If you are only treating the symptoms, the underlying root cause will not be addresses and will manifest differently later in life.

Some of these lifestyle changes and supplementation are:

  • Essential fatty acids (omega 3’s available in the office)

  • Healing your gut (probiotics, soon tone available in the office)

  • Vitamins and mineral like B’s, C, Iodine, Selenium, Zinc (soon to be available in the office)

  • Avoid toxins like Chlorine and Flourine

  • Avoid plastic containers

  • Avoid processed food

  • Exercise

  • Neuro-Structural Chiropractic Adjustments

  • Get enough rest

At Platinum Chiropractic our goal is Neuro-Structural Correction of the spine and nervous system. In this way we improve and normalize the function and connection of the nerve supply from the brain to the body, allowing glands such as your thyroid and other bodily systems to work properly. We have many patients who have seen incredible improvements in their thyroid function as a result of specific chiropractic adjustments.

Anti-Aging Secret!

Anti aging, your health, and what you can do.

As times goes by, we all notice the effects of aging. What if we could slow down this decline? Science is starting to really look at how we can control or help our genetics to perform better.

One of the ways that DNA is measured is through the telomere length on the end of a DNA strand. Telomeres are the strand of DNA that is attributed to aging and healthy cell function. Throughout your life, they are essentially "used up" to create the cells in your body. Once your telomeres are used up, you no longer produce healthy normal cells, and you begin to decline.

Fortunately there is some good news. One of the features of consistent chiropractic care is its positive affect on DNA. Consistent chiropractic care lengthens these telomere strands, which result in normal production of healthy cell tissue, wow!

What is Protection?

Protection

When a patient has completed their Neuro-Structural Corrective Care Plan and achieved great results, they become eligible for Protection Care. People choose to come in and get checked for Neuro-Structural Shifts because, even though they no longer have glaring symptoms, they want to protect their structure from drifting and or shifting and maintain the progress they have made.

Keeping your nervous system free of interference, allows your body to function without any loss or compensation, and prevents problems before they arise. Since many secondary conditions, aka symptoms, are typically caused by structural shifts, wouldn’t it make sense to get checked and adjusted on an ongoing basis to allow your body to work normally? Remember, normal is healthy.

Send us an email if you are interested in learning more about Protection Care. info@platinumchiroca.com

Normal Structure is NOT an Option

We all know that the human body has a normal temperature, a normal blood pressure, and normal eyesight, but most of us are unaware that there is also a normal when it comes to the structural alignment of the spine.

What would happen if there were a shift from the normal alignment of your automobile? How about a shift in your home’s foundation? If your spine shifts from its normal structural alignment, the result may be a variety of secondary conditions (symptoms) such as neck and back pain, headaches, pinched nerves, sciatica, numbness/tingling — just to name a few.

Restoring and protecting your body’s normal structural alignment is a key factor in maintaining optimal health and wellness.

Concussions, Dementia, & Chiropractic Care

NFL Lawsuit on Concussions

Jim McMahon, former Chicago Bears quarterback, speaks to an audience at Chelsea Piers Stamford, CT about being a patient of Dr. Scott Rosa, a cranio-cervical specialist, and Dr. Rosa's procedure on treating cranio-cervical issues.

Unless you have been living under a rock, you have seen all of the attention recently put towards concussions and their long lasting effects, especially when it comes to football. Even Netflix made a movie called "Concussion" staring Will Smith and based on the true story of Dr. Omalu linking NFL players' concussions and brain disorders.

In almost all concussive cases there is high likeliness for trauma to the spine, causing spinal shifts. Anytime the spine has a shift in one or more of its vertebrae (spinal segment), it creates a poor foundation and reduces nerve function leading to secondary conditions (symptoms). If gone untreated with specific adjustments, spinal shifts cause nerve pressure and damage to vital tissues which causes a cascade of poor health and eventually disease.

Jim McMahon, former Chicago Bears quarterback, recently spoke about his successful treatment with Dr. Scott Rosa, a chiropractor who focuses on treating cranio-cervical issues (head and upper neck). Below are some excerpts from an article in the Stamford Advocate and McMahon's treatment and results.

  • "McMahon was diagnosed with dementia several years ago and said his physical pain is diminishing while his short term memory loss has improved since receiving the treatments."
  • "I feel great now," McMahon said. "My head is much more clear now, but the biggest difference is physically I feel much better."
  • The upright MRI revealed McMahon had spinal fluid cooling in his brain and a rotation of the vertebrae in his neck which was leading to his condition.
  • After the diagnosis, McMahon went to Dr. Rosa, a chiropractor, who was able to adjust McMahon's neck, leading to immediate relief.
  • "It felt like a toilet flushed in my head. I felt better immediately," McMahon said. "The only time I felt better before that was when I was lying down, so, I stayed in bed most days."

While we aren't all football players in the NFL, these findings are relevant to each of us when it comes to the risks of concussions, the development of brain disorders, and receiving the proper treatment. Whether being hit in the head as a child while playing, or in a car accident as an adult, specific chiropractic adjustments can help improve many conditions like concussions and whiplash by adjusting Neuro-Structural shifts to normalize all functions in the body.

Many people choose to get adjusted on a regular basis because it continually helps improve their Neuro-Structure, which improves their function making them feel great.

Normal is Not an Option

At Platinum Chiropractic we focus on Neuro-Structural Correction because restoring and protecting your body's normal structural alignment is a key factor in maintaining optimal health and wellness.

We all know the human body has a normal temperature, a normal range for blood pressure, and normal eyesight, but most of us are unaware that there is also a normal when it comes to the structural alignment of the spine.

What would happen if there were a shift from the normal alignment of your automobile? How about a shift in your home's foundation? If your spine shifts from its normal structural alignment, the result may be a variety of secondary conditions (symptoms) such as neck and back pain headaches, pinched nerves, sciatica, numbness/tingling – just to name a few.

Restoring and protecting your body's normal structural alignment is a key factor in maintaining optimal health and wellness. That is why here at Platinum Chiropractic we take many objective measurements to gage if your spine has shifted and where those shifts are. This allows us to be more specific with your care that's customized for each person.
