Health Challenge Day 21: Omega 3 Rich Foods

Health Challenge Day 21: Omega 3 Rich Foods

Omega 3's are anti-inflammatory to our bodies and are the required building blocks for a healthy brain and nervous system. The normal ratio ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 (which is pro-inflammatory) should be 1:2. The average American has a ratio of 1:24!!!! No wonder everyone has aches and pains all over and can't think straight, we’re inflamed because of our food.

So what can we do about it? In order to get the recommended dosage

Health Challenge Day 9: 8 min of Squatting

Platinum Health Challenge Day 9: 8 Minutes of Squatting

Ready for Day 9? Sit in that squat! We all used to be able to do it… You may not be able to remember it, but before a baby can walk, it can sit in a squat. That includes you.

Keep your feet flat on the ground and find a relaxed resting squat position as low as you can. If you need a little assistance, you can elevate your heels by an inch or two using a book, ledge, or curb to make it easier on your hips. You can also hold on to something in front of you like a door frame or post if you feel you’re falling backwards.

We find the best way to approach a challenge like this is to pick a trigger and do the task every time you walk by that trigger. For example, say your trigger is the kitchen sink. Every time you walk by the kitchen sink, hang out in a resting squat for 30 seconds. You will accumulate 8 minutes in no time!

How to Win:

Health Challenge Day 2: Meditate for 5 Min

Platinum Health Challenge Day 2: Meditate for 5 Minutes

Great job on complimenting 5 people today. How did it make you feel?

For Day 2 we are moving inward: Meditate for 5 Minutes.

Feel free to meditate using any technique you like, but here’s a basic meditation: Sit up tall with your spine straight, either in a chair or on the floor. You could also do a walking meditation if sitting is troublesome for you. Close your eyes or just gaze softly downward. Breathe slowly and fully through your nose. As thoughts go through your mind, return your focus to the sensation of your breathing. Set a timer so you know when your done, or try a guided meditation via a meditation app.

The Thyroid

Your Questions Answered

Since January is Thyroid Awareness Month we thought we would talk about your thyroid’s roll in your body, what happens when it isn’t working correctly, and what you can do to support your thyroid’s function, including Neuro-Structural chiropractic care.

Still have questions? Contact our practice in Santa Clara, CA to schedule a Complimentary Consultation.

Patients often ask us about thyroid problems and if chiropractic can help. Since January is Thyroid Awareness Month we thought we would talk about your thyroid’s roll in your body, what happens when it isn’t working correctly, and what you can do to support your thyroid’s function.

As you may already know, your thyroid is an endocrine (hormone) gland located in your neck right under your voice box. This gland influences every cell in your body. It regulates your metabolism, controls fat burning, and influences the growth and development of nearly every process in your body. Pretty important right? Additionally, its nerve supply and connection to your brain comes from the Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve, which is a branch of the Vagus nerve, located at the C4-T1 levels of the cervical (neck) spine.

Many people in the United States have problems with their thyroid function. It is estimated that 40% of the Adult population has Hypothyroidism. (N Eng J Med, 315:1486; 1986)  And “women are five to eight times more likely than men to have thyroid problems.” (American Thyroid Association)

So, now that we know what our thyroid glands are and what they do, we can talk about what happens whey they are not functioning correctly. An unhealthy thyroid can lead to many health issues such as fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, acne, eczema, gum disease, infertility, cancer, and autoimmune diseases.

Some of the symptoms of thyroid inadequacy (hypoactive) are:

  • Cold hands / feet or cold sensitivity

  • Constipation

  • Infertility

  • Muscle cramping

  • Increased serum cholesterol

  • Dry, rough skin/ dry hair and brittle nails

  • Chronic fatigue

  • Difficulty losing weight

  • Swollen hands / feet or puffy face, or abdominal bloating

Hyperactive thyroid has similar symptoms, but also some opposite effects like:

  • Feeling restless, nervous, emotional, irritable, and as if you're always on the go

  • Sleeping poorly

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Frequent bowel movements

  • Irregular menstrual periods in women

  • Weight loss (or weight gain, in rare cases)

  • Rapid, forceful, or irregular heartbeat

  • Lack of menstrual periods in women

  • Protruding eyes or exophthalmos

The best way to diagnose a thyroid issue is through blood tests and a full thyroid panel. A lot of times a standard blood test isn’t complete enough to get a full picture and will often times under diagnose a thyroid problem.

Some of the most common factors contributing to the development of a thyroid problem are:

  • Halogens in the environment like Chlorine, Flouride, Bromine

  • Poor gut health

  • Lack of nutrients like Zinc, Copper, B vitamins, Vitamin C, Iodine, and Selenium

  • Structural shifts in the cervical and thoracic spine

Treatments for thyroid related problems vary from standard medical hormone replacement to more natural ways with nutrition and lifestyle changes. Regardless of which course of treatment is chosen, changes to your lifestyle are imperative because a thyroid issue is typically a symptom of a larger problem. If you are only treating the symptoms, the underlying root cause will not be addresses and will manifest differently later in life.

Some of these lifestyle changes and supplementation are:

  • Essential fatty acids (omega 3’s available in the office)

  • Healing your gut (probiotics, soon tone available in the office)

  • Vitamins and mineral like B’s, C, Iodine, Selenium, Zinc (soon to be available in the office)

  • Avoid toxins like Chlorine and Flourine

  • Avoid plastic containers

  • Avoid processed food

  • Exercise

  • Neuro-Structural Chiropractic Adjustments

  • Get enough rest

At Platinum Chiropractic our goal is Neuro-Structural Correction of the spine and nervous system. In this way we improve and normalize the function and connection of the nerve supply from the brain to the body, allowing glands such as your thyroid and other bodily systems to work properly. We have many patients who have seen incredible improvements in their thyroid function as a result of specific chiropractic adjustments.

Anti-Aging Secret!

Anti aging, your health, and what you can do.

As times goes by, we all notice the effects of aging. What if we could slow down this decline? Science is starting to really look at how we can control or help our genetics to perform better.

One of the ways that DNA is measured is through the telomere length on the end of a DNA strand. Telomeres are the strand of DNA that is attributed to aging and healthy cell function. Throughout your life, they are essentially "used up" to create the cells in your body. Once your telomeres are used up, you no longer produce healthy normal cells, and you begin to decline.

Fortunately there is some good news. One of the features of consistent chiropractic care is its positive affect on DNA. Consistent chiropractic care lengthens these telomere strands, which result in normal production of healthy cell tissue, wow!

Your Electrical System

Structural shifts could be subtle, but they weaken your structure and obstruct your electrical system, which can cause many secondary conditions. Schedule a Complimentary Consultation today.

Chiropractic care is all about the skeletal structures of the body protecting the delicate electrical system (Nervous system) that coordinates all the cellular functions from your brain to the tips of your fingers and toes. This complex system is constantly being affected by our lifestyles. We sit, we lift, we slip, we fall, we turn and twist. All the while our skeletal system is moving, shifting, bending and protecting the vital structures inside.

Our goal at Platinum Chiropractic is to find the kinks and shifts that may have occurred suddenly or developed over time. These structural shifts could be subtle, but they weaken your structure and obstruct your electrical system, which can cause many secondary conditions. There's never a bad time to get checked and corrected, because this is happening constantly throughout our life. It's much easier to keep things normal and in check, rather than wait until you develop problems. If this makes you think of friends or family that you know are suffering from a physical condition that we can help with, share this article.

Plan for Success

It’s December… the last month of 2018. Let’s finish this year strong and set ourselves up for the new year hitting the ground running!

The best way to make sure you are successful with your New Years resolutions is to start them NOW. Want to start working out? Eating less crap? Reading more? Start with small steps this month, and you’ll find that when everyone else is just beginning to be more healthful, you’ll be one step ahead.

Those that plan for success tend to be more successful than people who wait for things to happen to them. Get started today!

Below are three tips to keep in mind through the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.

1) Make sure you get in for your adjustments. This will ensure you’re feeling great and your electrical system is functioning at its best so that you can adapt to all the stress through the holiday month.

2) Take your recommended supplements: Omega 3’s and Vitamin D. These will help balance your hormones, giving you essential nutrients, and help reduce your inflammation.

3) Make sure you get as much sleep as possible between all the holiday celebrations. This will allow you to recover your brain and body, improve adaptability, and keep you from developing a cold or illness.

It's All In The Hips

HipMobility.jpg

Do you sit all day every day? If you're like most people then you probably sit for an average of 11 hours per day.

Do you wonder why your back hurts? One of the causes can be improper tensioning your hips.

Since your hips are directly tied in to your lower back, there are a few mobility stretches that can help alleviate this issue and help you restore your flexibility.

Come join us for this hip mobility class to learn more. RSVP today, space is limited.

As summer winds down and the changing of seasons begins, it is time to look ahead to the holiday season. To be successful in your goals, it’s important to start preparing for the upcoming months before the holiday festivities are underway. The better prepared you are with strategies around diet and exercise, the more you can enjoy celebrating and feasting with friends and family.

To get you started on your goals now, let's bust a common nutritional myth: “Fasting makes you burn muscle…” Wrong! At least for most of us. Only once you have less than 4% body fat, then your body will start to break down muscle. But before that, your body accesses fat for energy. Burning muscle first would be like storing firewood (fat) to burn for the winter, and as soon as you need energy you throw your sofa in the fire. That makes no sense physiologically if you have enough fat (firewood) to use as energy first.

Come hear more about this and other myths at our event on September 18th. RSVP to Kristen at info@platinumchiroca.com to save your spot.

Headaches & Migraines...

can be a pain in the neck, literally!

At Platinum Chiropractic we care for a lot patients that come in with chronic headaches and migraines. Most people experiencing headaches or migraines manage the effects through pharmacology in the form of medication. Although medication can cover up some of the pain they also alter mood, digestion, and have other side effects. People come see us with the hopes that structural chiropractic correction might help ease their pain, intensity, or frequency of headaches, and they are right! Because of the work we do with Neuro-Structural correction, we can test for areas of the spine which have a high correlation in causing headaches. The best part is when we start adjusting people, they can have immediate reductions in headaches and migraines. People frequently tell us at their progress examinations that they stopped taking migraine medications because they’ve been migraine free for months! And the only thing they have changed in their life is having regular adjustments at our practice.

Let us know if your headaches and migraines have decreased in frequency and intensity. Actually, share this article with your family and friends and let others know where they can get help too, because there are a lot of people out there suffering. You always have options when it comes to health care, and at Platinum Chiropractic we are a non-drug, non-surgical solution to many health conditions.
