Exercises for Sciatica and Back Pain

Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of your sciatic nerve, which branches from your lower back at L1-S1, goes through your hips and buttocks, and down each leg. Next Tuesday we will be talking about what causes this and what you can do to help manage and prevent it.

Our June workshop is coming up NEXT Tuesday June 11. We will begin with a short anatomy and physiology review, where Dr. Karo will explain how your lumbar spine works, and how it integrates with your hips and lower extremities.

Afterwards we will get interactive, and go through some of the foundational exercises for improving the function of your lower back and hips.

Wear athletic type clothing that you can move freely in.

Tips for Joint Health

Interested in learning more about keep your joints (and especially your spine) healthy? Come to our workshop on August 14... Move Your Spine. Dr. Karo will be leading a mobility class full strategies to maximize your Neuro-Strucutral chiropractic care for both the short and long term.

While there are several different types of joints in the body, they all require the same factors to stay healthy. Our joints are special because, unlike most other parts of our body, there is almost no blood supply feeding directly into them. This is relevant because blood is our body’s way of nourishing itself and removing waste. So for joints, this means there is no pump (the heart) to move blood in and out. Instead, joints rely on internal bio-mechanics (movement) to pump fluids and nutrients in and  out of each joint.

This is why the most important factors for joint health are proper alignment, daily full range movement, and nutrients. For each of us this means we need to make sure we move our joints everyday. One of the key benefits of chiropractic care is the resulting improvement in joint biomechanics of your spine, which creates healthier joint cells.

30 Day health Challenge Day 24

For Day 24 we are focusing on Hip Mobility: 5 Minutes Each Side. Accumulate 5 minutes each side throughout the day, in intervals no less than 1 minute each.

This is an excellent stretch because it can be done while sitting, something we all spend a lot of time doing. You should feel the stretch on the hip of the leg that is bent. Check out Dr. Karo's full video on Instagram and Facebook.

Tomorrow is Day 19, Friday and everyone's favorite mobility challenge: Couch Stretch. This time accumulate 4 minutes on each side, in intervals no less than one minute each. check Facebook for the video on how to do a couch stretch. #platinumchirochallenge

30 Day Health Challenge Day 13

The weekend is here! Lets celebrate by getting back into those couch stretches. Day 13: Couch Stretch for 3 minutes each side.... are you noticing a pattern? 

The couch stretch is excellent for combating all of the sitting we do in our daily lives. When we sit we are actively shortening and damaging our hips! The couch stretch helps to bring this back to balance. This improves hip extension and knee flexion and thereby "turning on" your glutes. An elastic band, like pictured here adds many pounds of tractioning force to your hip which creates a more targeted and stronger stretch.
