Plan for Success

It’s December… the last month of 2018. Let’s finish this year strong and set ourselves up for the new year hitting the ground running!

The best way to make sure you are successful with your New Years resolutions is to start them NOW. Want to start working out? Eating less crap? Reading more? Start with small steps this month, and you’ll find that when everyone else is just beginning to be more healthful, you’ll be one step ahead.

Those that plan for success tend to be more successful than people who wait for things to happen to them. Get started today!

Below are three tips to keep in mind through the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.

1) Make sure you get in for your adjustments. This will ensure you’re feeling great and your electrical system is functioning at its best so that you can adapt to all the stress through the holiday month.

2) Take your recommended supplements: Omega 3’s and Vitamin D. These will help balance your hormones, giving you essential nutrients, and help reduce your inflammation.

3) Make sure you get as much sleep as possible between all the holiday celebrations. This will allow you to recover your brain and body, improve adaptability, and keep you from developing a cold or illness.

Common Sense vs. Rocket Science

Neuro-Structural Corrective Chiropractic Care is a partnership.

The results you enjoy are based on what we do on each visit and what you’re willing to do between visits to support your care.

Here are some suggestions that can help you get well faster.

  1. Ice can be a natural pain reliever. Apply an ice pack for no longer than 15 minutes and remove it for the same amount of time.
  2. Exercise by walking as soon as you are able to. Avoid bed rest and any activities or postures that aggravate your condition. Make sure you are performing your specific corrective exercises daily.
  3. Learn how to bend, lift and turn properly so as to not worsen your pain.
  4. Improve your nutrition and water intake so that your body has the resources it needs to heal.
  5. Keep your visit schedule. Each visit builds on the ones before, so missing a visit interferes with the momentum necessary to establish healthier spinal patterns.

No rocket science here—it’s mostly common sense. Looking forward to seeing your progress.

Hormones: What Are They?

Hormones are something we typically hear about when teenagers are going through puberty. What we don’t realize is that hormones are constantly regulating how our bodies work 24/7 throughout our lifetime.

Hormones come from our endocrine system. The endocrine system (hormones) is the collection of glands of an organism that secrete hormones directly into the circulatory system (blood) to be carried towards distant target organs. (Wikipedia) Although the hormones circulate throughout the body, each type of hormone is targeted toward certain organs and tissues. There are many glands in our bodies that release hormones in order to control homeostasis, reproduction, metabolism, energy, and blood pressure, just to name a few. Your glands receive a signal from the brain and release hormones based on what the body is experiencing to make sure it adapts well to its environment. The most common hormone disease is diabetes, followed by thyroid disease.

As we have been discussing, hormones are chemicals in our bodies that help to regulate and control the functions of our bodies. When these chemicals are interfered with, our bodies don’t function normally, leading to dis-regulation and eventually disease. There are many causes of disruption to our hormones. Our external environment such as the food we eat, the water we drink, and the air we breathe all influence this system from the outside in. This is common knowledge.

Something that is not understood well by most people is the control mechanism of our hormones inside our bodies and how it is regulated and managed. The endocrine system (hormone system) is controlled and regulated by the nervous system (brain and spinal cord). Together they are called the neuroendocrine system. Your nervous system controls the specific release of hormones depending on the specific messages it receives. Your body has to have a complete connection in order to operate normally and ensure your hormone system can receive the correct messages sent by your brain, in order to keep you well. They work together constantly.

Due to life, and trauma, there could be a spinal interruption (structural shift) to your neuroendocrine system, which causes it to malfunction. This interruption is usually caused in the central nervous system, spinal cord, and brain.

At Platinum Chiropractic we focus on Neuro-Structural Correction, utilizing our diagnostics to test for any internal interruption, locate where it is, and correct the dysfunction in the communication system of your body. This allows the internal workings of the body to send and receive all messages, ensuring your neuroendocrine system can function just like it should.

Boosting Your Immunity with Chiropractic

Pero concluded that “chiropractic may optimize whatever genetic abilities you have” so that you can fully resist serious disease. “I’m very excited to see that without chemical intervention…this particular group of patients under chiropractic care, did show a very improved response, “ he told CBSRF. “These changes occur from chiropractic treatment.”

In 1975, Ronald Pero, PhD., chief of cancer prevention research at New York’s Preventive Medicine Institute and professor of medicine in environmental health at New York University, began developing scientifically valid ways to estimate individual susceptibility to carious chronic disease. Pero and his colleagues found strong evidence that susceptibility to cancer could be gauged by the activities of various enzymes involved in metabolic and genetic change due to exposure to carcinogenic or “mutagenic” chemicals. An individual's immune system responsiveness, or immune competence, “also was directly linked to certain DNA-repairing enzymes, which provided an objective way to assess disease susceptibility." Lack of those enzymes Pero said, “definitely limits not only your lifespan, but also your ability to resist serious disease consequence.”

Pero was also fascinated by various hormones’ synergistic relationships with other cancer-inducing agents to promote disease. For example, thyroid hormones affect the early phases inducing of radiation and chemically induced cancer. If the thyroid produced too much of either thyroxine or thyroid-stimulating hormone, cancer risk greatly increases. Since the nervous system regulates hormonal balances, it too can influence susceptibility to cancer. Along these lines, various kinds of spinal cord injuries are accompanied by a high risk of developing cancer, particularly lymphomas and lymphatic leukemia’s. This connection led Pero to consider chiropractic as a potential alternative for reducing the risk of immune breakdown and disease.

In 1986 Pero collaborated with Joseph Flesia, D.C., chairman of the board of directors, for the Chiropractic Basic Science Foundation, Inc. With a hefty grant from CBSRF, they began a research project at the University of Lund in Lund, Sweden. Using Pero’s test to gauge resistance to hazardous environmental chemicals, they hypothesized that people with cancer would have a suppressed immune response to such a toxic burden, while healthy people and people receiving chiropractic care should have a relatively enhanced response.

Measuring 107 individuals who had received long-term chiropractic care, more than 2 years, Pero’s team turned up some surprising findings. All of the chiropractic patients were “genetically normal” – that is, they had no obvious genetic reasons for increased resistance or susceptibility to disease. Any difference, therefore, had to be accounted for by environmental or therapeutic factors. The chiropractic patients also had 200 percent greater immune competence that people who had not received chiropractic, and 400 percent greater immune competence that the people with cancer or other serious diseases. Surprisingly, despite a wide range of ages in this study, the immune-competence did not show a decline with age-it was uniform for the entire group.

Just to be clear, at Platinum Chiropractic we do not treat any diseases such as cancer. We focus on Neuro-Structural correction of the spine and nervous system, which greatly enhances your chance and ability to regain and maintain good health. Stress and Your Health

We all know that too much stress can lead to decreased health; but how?

Well, we know stress causes a fight or flight (sympathetic) response in our bodies. When this occurs, our bodies’ muscles create tension. When this tension is repetitive, chronic or severe enough, it causes a shift in the spine. And as we all know, neuro-structural shifts cause nerve interference and reduce our body’s optimal function, which leads to many secondary conditions ie. pain, illness, and depression.

When stuck in fight or flight, our bodies are in a chronic state of stress, causing more tension and more nerve interference. Here’s how we at Platinum Chiropractic can help; neuro-structural adjustments break this viscous cycle and allow the body to restore to a more normal physiological state, known as homeostasis.

This is just one of the reasons why it’s important to get checked on a regular basis, making sure your body is working in a healthy normal way, and not stuck in a sick, stressed out, and reduced resistance state.

Programmed for Health

You’re not sick because you have pneumonia; you have pneumonia because you are sick.

This is a very important concept to understanding health, sickness, and disease. We talk a lot about how HEALTH is programmed into your body. Health is a default setting that is expressed when we perform genetically compatible actions, such as moving well, eating well, and thinking well.

The unhappy person is the target for any and every type of illness.
— Bruce Larson from his book There’s a Lot More to Health Than Not Being Sick

Now, it’s not just about being happy. It's more about taking responsibility in your daily life to ensure you are doing the correct things in order to express normal health physiology rather than making choices that cause a stress reaction in your body.

Lets look at an example:

Once upon a time during a winter holiday, a family of five siblings came together to spend a week together. They each had one child that was 5 years of age. What a great time! They all had the same food, water, and exposure to the outdoors; a similar environment and lifestyle for that week. Unfortunately, one of the siblings had a cold when he arrived with the obvious symptoms of a runny nose, coughing, sneezing; the normal responses when you have a cold virus. But that didn’t stop him from playing with all the children, from tag to wrestling.

The week following the holiday, some of the children started to show signs and symptoms of what the sick sibling had. Two of the children displayed exactly the same symptoms as the sick sibling, showing symptoms from the cold virus for a few days. Meanwhile two of the other children where absolutely normal, and one child was sick for an extra week. (Two normal, two sick, and one really sick).  The really sick child was taken to the medical doctor because his body was still showing stress physiology and was expressing signs and symptoms. They checked him out and diagnosed him with pneumonia.

Now, pneumonia is an infection in the lung tissue, and has a longer healing time than a cold. Here is the question for you: How could three children contract from the same source and have a different response? This is because their immune systems were either healthy, strong, and resistant to bacteria and viruses, or were already sick, stressed, and weak, allowing the virus to infiltrate the defenses of the body.

Sickness and disease are not entities in our body, they are the results caused from a lack of health. Health is a state of being that we have a response-ability to maintain with our actions and choices. When we are healthy, we don’t have disease or sickness by random chance. Remember, you’re not sick because you have pneumonia, you have pneumonia because you are already sick. Pneumonia just happens to be one way your body is trying to adapt to being sick.

At Platinum Chiropractic our goal is to maintain your spine and nerve system in a healthy state so the operating system of your body can respond and adapt to the environment, keeping you well. Does this mean you will never experience a cold from time to time? No, but by keeping your body in a healthy state, you will recover faster and more normally without side effects.

Hip Flexors

Hip flexors are muscles that cross our hip region, allowing us to bring our legs up to our torso, such as in walking and running. There are two groups of hip flexors; the quadriceps located on the front of your thigh, and the iliopsoas, which attach to your spine from your leg.

LowBackPain

Sitting, as well as biking and running (just to name a few activities) tighten these muscles, reducing our ability to function normally. Often times the tightening of your hip flexors causes your hips and spine to shift, which creates Nuero-Structural issues. In fact, hip flexors can become so tight that they limit our ability to stand upright and cause low back pain.

Below are two variations of a stretch you can perform to combat the tightening of your hip flexors. The first variation targets the quadricep portion of your hip flexor. For the second variation, target your iliopsoas by tucking your pelvis and tailbone under as seen in the photo. Try this out. Two minutes per side minimum. Remember, two minutes as compared to how long you sit every day isn't very long.

Variation 1: targets quadricep area portion of your hip flexor by pushing your hips forward and down.

Variation 1: targets quadricep area portion of your hip flexor by pushing your hips forward and down.

Variation 2: targets your iliopsoas by tucking your pelvis and tailbone under.

Variation 2: targets your iliopsoas by tucking your pelvis and tailbone under.

Segmental Movement Dysfunction

Similar to that of the Movement Deficiency Syndrome (MDS), which we talked about a few weeks ago, we are living in an epidemic of Segmental Movement Dysfunction (SMD). SMD takes the same principals as MDS and relates them to the joints or segments of the body. Each and every one of your segments are designed to move throughout their full range of motion everyday in order to stay healthy. When these segments don’t move, become fixated, or distort the proper alignment, a toxic or negative sensation is sent to the brain beginning a decrease in the normal functions of your body, increasing your body’s stress response, increasing muscular tension, and leading to degeneration and disease. Your most important segments are located in your spine, protecting your central nervous system, and in particular your upper neck region where your brain-stem is located.

Why is this daily movement through a correct and full range of motion so important? Believe it or not, the only way joints receive nutrients in and push waste out is by moving. There are no blood vessels within joints, therefore your joints need to move fully each and every day to maintain themselves, or else they start to decay.

Seems simple enough right? But when joints become fixated or displaced from their proper alignment, it becomes more complicated. One of the major reasons we develop fixated, immobile or shifted segments and joints is due to physical traumas. Physical traumas come in two fashions. One is a sudden trauma, like a car accident, falling while learning to walk, or a difficult birth. The second is repetitive postural micro traumas, such as sitting and/or working for long periods of time in poor positions. This causes segments of the spine to distort, shift, lock, and create a cascade of dysfunction of the brain and immediate structures of the body.

Regular spinal hygiene in the form of chiropractic care is necessary for the maintenance of these segmental joints throughout a life time. Chiropractic at its most basic level is all about motion and how that motion creates homeostasis (balanced function of your physiology) in the body.

Some of the effects of SMD:*

Joints:

  • Shrinks joint capsule
  • Increases compressive loading
  • Leads to joint contractures (shortening and hardening)

Ligaments:

  • Lowers failure or yield point
  • Decreases thickness of collagen fibers
  • Changes Disc Bio-chemistry
  • Decreases oxygen
  • Decreases glucose

Bone:

  • Decreases bone density
  • Eburnation (bone degeneration)
  • Osteophyte formation (bone Spurs)

Muscle:

  • Decrease thickness of collagen fibers
  • Decreases oxidative potential
  • Decreases muscle mass
  • Decreases mitochondria
  • Increases connective tissue fibrosis

At Platinum Chiropractic our focus is to reduce the SMDs in your body through our Neuro-Structural Corrective care. This is exactly what we are doing when we check and adjust your body. We are restoring your body to normal movement, so that it can function as it was designed.

Every Two Weeks

You might have wondered why we recommend to get checked and adjusted a minimum of two times a month once you have reached the Protection phase of care. The reason is to prevent arthritis and joint degeneration. The journal Clinical Biomechanics reported as far back as 1987 that joint immobility, such as that which occurs when you have a neuro-structural shift, can lead to permanent damage in as little as two weeks. (Clinical Biomechanics 2:223-229)

At Platinum Chiropractic our goal is to not only restore normal structure and motion, but to also maintain it so your spinal joints don’t degenerate and interfere with the electrical system of your body. This insures the best possible function and health your body can have. You are risking a slow loss of function if you wait until you have symptoms to come in. When was the last time you were checked?

NCFit Corporate Cup 2017

This past weekend we participated in the Corporate Cup, a one day fitness competition between Silicon Valley's businesses. Platinum Chiropractic was one of the sponsors at the event, where we gave away t-shirts, shaker bottles, and information about our focus in Neuro-Structural Correction. Folks always ask if we "work" on people during these events, and we do not. We don't provide chiropractic care at events for a number of reasons. Because we focus on Neuro-Structural Correction, Platinum Chiropractic takes a more comprehensive approach than traditional chiropractic. Our job is to do a thorough analysis of your foundation, which cannot be done properly in a competition setting. From that analysis we can build a plan to properly make corrections. Providing immediate care on the competition floor without a full examination only serves for short term symptom reduction. Our goal is provide you, our patients, with the best service for the long term, and we thank you for trusting us with your care.

It is not just a backache... It is a health problem

spinalarthritis_SantaClaraChiropractor

When your structural alignment is not normal, your joints begin to wear out faster. We call this 'early onset degeneration'. This area of degeneration begins to push against your delicate nerves and blood vessels, causing anything connected to those nerves to malfunction.

This is why at Platinum Chiropractic we strive for the ultimate neuro-structural correction. Because it is not just a backache, it is a health problem.

Thyroid Function and Neuro-Structural Chiropractic Care

The thyroid gland is located on the front part of the neck below the thyroid cartilage (Adam's apple). The gland produces thyroid hormones, which regulate body metabolism. Thyroid hormones control metabolism and virtually all other processes in the body. Without thyroid hormones, the body cannot form RNA, which is needed for the process of transcription necessary to produce proteins and enzymes. Consequently, without thyroid hormones, the body cannot produce proteins to repair damaged tissues, or enzymes, which catalyze virtually all reactions within the body

Disorders of the thyroid gland can result in either the production of too much (hyperthyroidism) or not enough (hypothyroidism) hormones.

Scientific and clinical evidence have shown that certain cases of thyroid disorders result from the malfunction of the nerves pathways that control the thyroid's production of thyroid hormone. Whether too little or too much thyroid hormone is produced, the abnormal level can be due to a malfunction between the brain, pituitary, spinal cord, and thyroid, and can be caused by certain types of trauma to the spine.

Traumatic and micro-traumatic injuries that affect the spine and nervous system have been shown to adversely affect the function of the thyroid. One study published in the Journal of Manipulative Therapeutics examined 100 whiplash patients and found that many suffered from poor thyroid function after their injury. Another study published in the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association reported a correlation between cervical spine problems and thyroid abnormalities.

A growing body of clinical research shows that Chiropractic can often help people who suffer from thyroid conditions. This would stand to reason since the purpose of Neuro-Structural Correction is the restoration of nervous system pathways, which is accomplished by safe and specific adjustments to the spine. Chiropractic is not a treatment for thyroid disease and Doctors of Chiropractic do not claim to be able to cure thyroid conditions, but by removing nerve interference from the spinal column, they allow the body to maximize its inherent healing ability.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a profoundly important nutrient that provides a vast array of health benefits. The question is, do we really need to supplement? And if we do, what's the proper dosage?

It is estimated that up to 85% of people have insufficient levels of vitamin D and are unaware of their deficient state. While conventional media and medicine promote sun avoidance, doing so can actually put your health in grave danger and cause vitamin D deficiency (Mercola.com).

Vitamin D is a very special vitamin because it has so many uses in the body; it’s actually more like a hormone. Over 3,000 genes that we know of are symbiotically using Vitamin D.

Dr. Robert Heaney, a professor and one of the most well respected researchers in the field, has studied osteoporosis, vitamin D, and calcium physiology for over 50 years. Trained as a physician and endocrinologist, he has been working at the Creighton University’s Osteoporosis Research Center, which he founded, since the late 1960s, with a focus on bone biology. "Inevitably, when you deal with bones, sooner or later, your path crosses with vitamin D, which is vital and important for a whole host of functions," says Heaney. According to him, vitamin D is involved in the biochemical cellular machinery of all cells and tissues in your body. When you do not have enough, that “machinery” does not work very well. Consequently, your entire body struggles to operate as programmed into our genomes.

Optimal vitamin D levels can slash your risk of cancer by as much as 60%. Keeping your levels optimized can help prevent at least 16 different types of cancer, including pancreatic, lung, ovarian, prostate, and skin cancers. Moreover, vitamin D can build your defenses against cancer and other diseases by:

  • Enhancing the self-destruction of mutated cells (which can replicate and cause cancer)
  • Slowing down the production and spread of cancer cells
  • Reducing the risk of other conditions as well, including type 2 diabetes, chronic inflammation, age-related macular degeneration (the leading cause of blindness), and Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Exhibiting its infection-fighting abilities in the treatment of tuberculosis, pneumonia, colds, and flu.
  • Improving seizure control in epileptics.

The best way to attain Vitamin D is through sun exposure without the use of sun block between 10am and 2pm. The sun provides beneficial UVB wavelengths that are needed to optimize your levels. It emits two types of wavelengths at different periods in a day: UVA rays and UVB rays. Your body requires UVB for vitamin D production. Unless you’re living in a tropical region, you can not get vitamin D from the sun year round. That is why a good vitamin D supplement is essential for health. Experts agree that adults need about 5,000 IU’s and children need about 3,000 IU’s per day to maintain healthy levels. The best vitamin D supplement we have found is the one we have at our office. It’s comes from Innate Choice, contains Vitamin D3 from lanolin in a base of certified organic virgin olive oil.
